It is with great sadness that we learned about the recent passing of Ronald P. Mason, PhD, on August 18, 2026, at the age of 82. Ron had a distinguished career in the field of redox biology as a Head of the Free Radical Metabolism Group in the Immunity, Inflammation and Disease Laboratory at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, until his retirement in 2018. His research addressed the use of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and spin trap approaches in the biological detection of oxygen-derived radicals. Ron was an active long-time member of SfRBM, and received several prestigious honors from our society, including induction as SfRBM Fellow and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007, and also received the NIEHS Scientist of the Year award in 2006. He was a former mentor and advisor for over 50 scientists, many of whom have built successful independent academic careers. Ron was a true redox pioneer and his passing is a great loss for our research field. He is survived by his wife, 3 children, and 5 grandchildren.
