Home SfRBM has expanded the number of Travel Awards available to member students and postdoctoral fellows who wish to attend SfRBM 2024 and present their research. There will be a total of 30 awards across three categories for the conference, to be held November 20-23, 2024 in Savannah, Georgia.
1) Traditional Travel Awards
Sponsored by SfRBM’s Junior Awards Committee, ten (10) awards at $1,000 USD each will be provided to postdoc and student SfRBM members from the United States and the rest of the world. An additional ten (10) awards at $500 USD each will be given to postdoc or student SfRBM members in South America. Winners will receive special recognition during the 2024 Conference and free registration to the 2025 or 2026 conference.
2) DEI Travel Awards (5 @ $1,000 USD)
Sponsored by SfRBM’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, Travel Awards will be provided to member trainees who are underrepresented in science or marginalized and/or intentionally ignored identities in society (BIPOC, LGBTQIA and/or disabled). These awards are meant to increase participation/access and offer funding for trainees to present their research at the SfRBM 2024 Conference. The top-scored abstract of this group will be guaranteed an oral symposia presentation slot (15 minutes).
3) SfRBM Journal Travel Awards (5 @ $1,000 USD)
Sponsored by SfRBM’s Publications Outreach Committee, Travel Awards will be provided to member trainees in Latin America to present their research at the SfRBM 2024 Conference with the expectation that they submit an article related to their work to one of SfRBM’s journals within 1 year. The top-scored abstract of this group will be guaranteed an oral symposia presentation slot (15 minutes). These awards are also meant to highlight the upcoming SfRBM 2025 Conference, to be held in November 2025 in DC, USA.
4) SfRBM Foundation Travel Awards (20 @ $500 USD)
Last year, the SfRBM Foundation created an additional series of travel awards and registration waivers that will be available to trainees in Mexico and South America and awarded based on the merit of their abstract.
SfRBM’s Young Investigator Awards (YIAs) will be presented to students (master or doctoral) and postdoctoral fellows based on their submitted abstract and presentation of their work at the Annual Conference, either in oral or poster symposia.
Candidates must be the first author on a submitted abstract, must check the appropriate box on the electronic abstract form, submit the abstract by August 15, 2024, and must be fully registered to attend the conference. Eligible graduate students must be enrolled in an accredited full-time master or doctoral degree program at the time of abstract submission. Eligible postdoctoral fellows must be engaged in full-time postdoctoral research and must have no more than five years of research experience beyond their doctoral degree. Finally, to be considered for the award, the author must be an SfRBM student (master or doctoral) or postdoc member. Presenting authors are limited to submitting 1 abstract to be considered for a Young Investigator Award. SfRBM recommends authors submit their best work for YIA consideration. YIA awardees will receive a $500 stipend in recognition of their work as well as complimentary conference registration for SfRBM 2025 or SfRBM 2026.
Young Investigator Award Judging Criteria
SfRBM’s Undergraduate Research Award will be presented to an undergraduate student based on their submitted abstract and presentation of their work as a poster at the Annual Conference. An oral presentation by an undergraduate will also be eligible for an award. Candidates must be the first author on a submitted abstract, must check the appropriate box on the electronic abstract form, submit the abstract by August 15, 2024, and must be fully registered for the conference. Undergraduates are defined as students enrolled in an accredited full-time bachelor's degree or up to 6 months post-graduation at the time of abstract submission. Research presented must have been completed as an undergraduate or high school student. To be considered for the award, the author must be an SfRBM undergraduate student member.
