Job Description:

Basic Sciences Research Lab at the Kansas City University is seeking a Research Associate to perform a variety of laboratory procedures involving many steps and detailed techniques described in variety of research protocols. Plans research projects and assist in the design of protocols. Collect and organize experimental results, maintains accurate, detailed, and complete records of work performed, and analyze of data. Able to work independently with confidence. Must have the ability and the experience to work with and assist graduate and medical students in their research projects. Can communicate clearly and precisely to other members of our research team and to personnel outside of our laboratory. Contributes to the advancement of the Kansas City University by helping ensure high quality outcomes in research endeavors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Work with and assist graduate and medical students in their research projects by providing support and coordinating lab activities
Performs routine laboratory reagent preparation and storage, equipment and supplies acquisition and maintenance
Keep accurate and complete record of lab supplies and equipment. Keep the lab highly organized and safe
Performs Tissue Culture using aseptic techniques
Conduct in vivo animal studies, and ability to work with laboratory animals.
Performs immunological experiments including western blots and ELISAs
Performs biochemical procedures
Performs flow cytometric analysis, and imaging using advanced microscopy techniques.
Performs procedures in investigating gene expression including real-time PCR.

Supportive Functions:

Assists in communication of experimental work and refining of new techniques
Collect, analyze, and summarize data using paper and computerized methods.
Contribute to manuscripts, abstracts and publications, and present results/findings at different venues and events.
Collect and track data, perform data entry for reports and maintain records of methods used. Prepare materials for reports. Analyze data.
Prepare bibliographies and abstracts for publications. May present results/findings at team and departmental meetings.
Performs all work in accordance with university regulations and policies
Performs administrative duties that include prepare and assist with IRB, IBC and IACUC documentation or similar protocol submissions, if applicable. Track various indicators of project progress and summarize in reports to the research team.
Work with environmental health and safety to maintain compliance and a safe lab environment. Document compliance with safety and regulatory guidelines. Assist with procurement of lab supplies and materials, and maintain accurate and complete record of lab supplies and equipment.
May initiate purchasing requests, monitor accounts/ expenditures, and any general administrative tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree plus 2 years equivalent experience
3+ years’ experience working in a biomedical research laboratory
Experience on working with laboratory animals
Must possess working knowledge of research and experimental protocols
Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems
Ability to analyze a situation and exercise good judgment and discretion as appropriate.
Proficiency in basic computer applications required.
Must have effective communication skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to work with faculty, staff, and students.
Must have excellent organizational skills be detail-oriented, and a self-starter.
Requires the ability to attain deadlines and complete assignments accurately

Physical Requirements:

Physical dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively to operate a keyboard and other office equipment, use a telephone, access file cabinets and other items stored at various levels, including overhead
Ability to speak and hear well enough to communicate clearly and understandably with sufficient volume to ensure an accurate exchange of information in normal conversational distance, over the telephone, and in a group setting
Ability to continuously operate a personal computer for extended periods of time (4 or more hours)
