The Free Radical and Radiation Biology Program (FRRBP) in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Iowa is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Scholar to conduct translational research on the redox biology of arthritis. This position will explore the intersection between redox metabolism and inflammation during arthritis development in order to identify and ultimately test new strategies for preventing arthritis. FRRBP is involved in conducting high impact basic science studies for translation into clinically viable therapies.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Conduct laboratory and animal experiments including survival surgeries and histological analyses.
  • Maintenance of a colony of transgenic mice.
  • Hypothesis generation, design and execution of research studies, data collection and interpretation.
  • Create and submit abstracts to national meetings for presentations.
  • Manuscript preparation and coordination as well as proposal preparation.
  • Develop independent research career and grant applications.

Education Requirements:
Must have a PhD in a bioscience discipline, MD/PhD, or DVM.

Experience Requirements:

  • Publication record in peer-reviewed national and international journals that have been indexed in PubMed.
  • Experience presenting research at national and regional meetings.
  • Experience working with large experiments and datasets.
  • Experience working with animal models as well as experience maintaining murine colonies and genotyping offspring.
  • Experience with general histological techniques.
  • Experience with standard biological techniques including Western blotting, PCR, rt-PCR, colorimetric assays, and tissue culture.
  • Experience with statistical methods used for univariate and multivariate analysis, logistic regression, and power analysis.

Highly Desirable Qualifications:

  • Excellent academic written and verbal communication skills.
  • 4 years of dedicated research experience in orthopedics, redox biology, or inflammation.
  • Experience with confocal microscopy.
  • Working knowledge of arthritis and models of arthritis.
  • Working knowledge of redox biology, mitochondria, and cellular metabolism.
