Ph.D. Position in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health
at FIU Stempel College

FIU Stempel College’s Department of Environmental and Occupational Health in collaboration with the Department of Human and Molecular Genetics at the College of Medicine, both within Florida International University in Miami, FL, are currently seeking a doctoral student to work on a grant funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Genomic instability, susceptibility to oxidative stress and cellular senescence

This position is a funded opportunity for a prospective doctoral student to study the role of genomic instability in the cellular response to genotoxins, which is significant in many major diseases. Key to this study will be the use of a cutting-edge technique that maps DNA damage and repair at a high resolution across the entire human genome. We will also assess chromatin organization as we explore how the location of DNA damage within specific regions of the genome is connected to the development of disease.

The ideal candidate will have:
• a strong bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological or biomedical sciences, and preferably a graduate degree in a related science
• excellent academic skills and writing skills
• excellent laboratory and analytical skills
• the drive and aptitude to complete a Ph.D. in less than five years from FIU

Interested candidates should contact the PI, Dr. Marcus S. Cooke at mcooke@fiu.edu, or co-PI Dr. Helen Tempest at htempest@fiu.edu. Please send a resume or CV. Interested candidates who are encouraged to apply will do so via SOPHAS at https://sophas.liaisoncas.com/applicant-ux/#/login.
